Tivo Upgrading

Over the weekend I upgraded our Tivo from 40 hours to about 200 hours. I picked up a 160GB HD for about 70 bucks after rebates from Circuit City last week, and purchased a bracket from Weaknees. Doing the upgrade itself was not that bad, although it did require a slight bit of knowledge about PC internals. Such as knowing how to jumper and hook up IDE drives! Anyway, the Hinsdale How-to has pretty good instructions for the actual software side of it, where you grab an image off of your current drive and then copy it onto the new drive.

All together it took less than two hours, and I wasn’t working at top efficiency. It seems to be well worth the time & money, so far. I highly recommend this procedure. Hard drives are pretty cheap, and there are good deals on sites like slickdeals and Ben’s Bargains quite frequently. If you don’t feel up to the challenge of copying over the image yourself you can even buy pre-imaged drives. Or for the ultimate in lazy, you can also send your Tivo in and have it upgraded for you. Of course both of those options are more expensive than the do-it-yourself route.
